At zappos we believe that you can improve your productivity by making self-awareness a habit, and that the best way to do that is to first ask yourself what you’re doing. I like to start by thinking about each of my tasks on a scale of one to five. I use this to figure out whether I’m working on a task that is high on the first or second level of self-awareness.
This is the trick that zappos has been using lately to get better at self-awareness while keeping a more traditional office culture. They’ve got a different set of leaders to make sure that they’re always aware of themselves and everyone else in the office. When I was working at zappos, it was extremely difficult to get in a conversation with someone because you needed to look at them to see if you were being too aggressive.
They have decided to start with a team of executives and move from there to the rest of the team. This isn’t necessarily a bad move. I think it’s a great way for zappos to start working with a more traditional office culture. I think that this is a step toward the more efficient and streamlined work environments we see at many of the other companies that are following zappos’ lead.
I think zappos seems like a pretty good model for a new company to emulate. Its not exactly a traditional company (or, at the very least, not a traditional company in the way that google is) but it has a fairly strong, collaborative culture. The company’s top-most executives are not just focused on the bottom line, but rather a companywide work/life balance.
There’s a definite benefit to having a culture like that in place. With every new zappos product, they have the first day to launch it on a Monday and the last day to launch on a Tuesday. Zappos has a great example of this in its recent purchase of Instacart. They also have a great example of a company that has an open work environment and not just a closed culture.
To an outsider it may seem like the best of both worlds, but it is something of a double standard because the way Zappos has set up its culture is not quite the same as the way Amazon does.Amazon does not have a work-life balance, but rather a more hierarchical work-life balance. This would be true for any company of the size of Zappos, but it is especially true for Amazon.
In the same way that the way you are raised impacts the way you think and behave, the way you are raised by Zappos could also impact your behavior toward work. The way you are raised by Amazon could also be the way you behave toward work.
Zappos has a similar work-life balance to Amazon. Zappos employees are expected to balance their work and home lives in a way that is not dissimilar to Amazon employees. Employees are also expected to have a certain amount of “free time” which is typically spent in the workplace. And the way employees are expected to spend their free time is in a certain way.
It might sound strange, but I think it is a good thing that Amazon and Zappos both have similar work-life-balance policies. At least that’s my take on the matter. A company’s work-life balance is actually a good thing in a way. Employees can know that their work and home lives are balanced.
